In the historical context, the development of music is inseparable from the development of sensory faculties. Music has gone through successive stages of development, just as human beings do. It has evolved, opened up new frontiers of seeing the world, and served as an expression of people’s feelings throughout its existence.

Since the XIX century, science has accumulated a lot of vital information about the impact of music on human beings, received as a result of experimental research. It has been scientifically proven that music can strengthen the immune system, lead to a reduction in disease, and improve metabolism.

The effects of music have been studied especially intensively in recent decades. Experiments are being conducted in several areas, such as:

  • The effects of individual musical instruments on living organisms;
  • The influence of the music of the great geniuses of mankind, the individual effects of individual composers’ works;
  • The impact on the human body of folk music.

It should be emphasized that in Russia, music therapy was recognized by the Ministry of Health as an official method of treatment in 2003. This method is widely used in psychotherapy, since music has a strong emotional impact on the human psycho-emotional sphere, it can serve as a non-medical cure for various emotional disorders.

Music exists in our lives as a means of self-knowledge and self-expression.

Music, perhaps like no other art, can affect the mood, to create it. All music can be divided into activating and relaxing, calming. There is even music “for the mind,” such as various dodecaphonies. In general, the perception of music is closely linked with mental processes, that is, it requires attention, observation, and quick wit. Music perceived by the auditory receptor affects the general state of the entire body, causing reactions related to changes in blood circulation and breathing.

How does music affect a person’s mood?

Probably everyone has noticed that music helps to cope with difficult situations in life. In addition, it is able to create and maintain the right mood, helps to relax (no wonder that after work, some people turn on their favorite songs as soon as they cross the threshold of their own house), and can, on the contrary, to energize.

In the morning it’s better to listen to upbeat and rhythmic music, it helps to wake up and energize for the whole day. Also cheerful and energetic music, affecting the human psyche, replaces sadness with joy and sadness with optimism and love of life.

Calm and smooth music helps to relax and calm, distract from everyday worries, reduce the number of thoughts in your head and focus on self-regulation. Slow and relaxing music affects a person like a sleeping pill.

We conducted a study in a 2nd year group of 60 students (including 30 males and 30 females) to see if they listen to music regularly. The chart shows the results, indicating that music is a constant companion of today’s youth.

This is not surprising, the power of music lies in the fact that its influence is due to the psycho-emotional state of the person. It is able to positively influence and make a person happier, by harmonizing his condition. Otherwise, the effect of music on a person can be negative.

Influence of music on a person depending on styles and directions

All-round influence on a person has classical music. Often scientists attribute simply a miraculous effect to classical works.

What students listen to?

In order to get closer to the question of genres and taste preferences of students, first we decided to find out whether they listen to music in preparation for classes.

The results showed that more than half of those surveyed do use music in preparation for class, as reflected in the chart below.

A person’s cultural and national background is also a kind of filter for the perception of certain music. But in light of today’s realities there is an interpenetration of different cultures into each other, and music is no exception.
